VINCI Construction takes control of its data operations

VINCI Construction choisit onepoint pour l’accompagner dans la numérisation de ses chantiers.

A Strategic Priority for VINCI Construction: Data Utilization

Mastering Data to Better Anticipate

Many companies still struggle to leverage their data effectively. Some focus too heavily on the potential of data at the expense of real-world use cases. This is not the case at VINCI Construction. For the construction industry leader, unlocking the value of data requires first mastering it, with the goal of implementing it in concrete, on-site applications. The performance and competitiveness of construction companies largely depend on their ability to anticipate.

Data Utilization: A Strategic Priority

In line with this strategic vision, VINCI Construction aimed to implement a platform designed to track equipment and collect field data from construction sites for analysis by its subsidiaries.
The pilot and the data processing pipelines were deployed by Onepoint as early as December 2019 as part of the Strasbourg Western Bypass project.

This is a strategic topic. Our ambition is high: we aim to extract the full value of our data while minimizing dependency on external providers.

VINCI Construction and Onepoint: A Winning Collaboration Built on an Agile Approach

To rethink its value chain around data and succeed in its initial experiments, the VINCI Construction SI entity was drawn to Onepoint’s positioning and approach on Data and IoT topics, as well as its proven track record.

VINCI Construction therefore chose to entrust the development of a cloud-based data platform to a partner with end-to-end expertise across the entire data processing chain (acquisition, processing, event detection, business reporting, etc.).

According to Olivier Vermont, Deputy Director of Project Management at VINCI Construction SI, the collaboration with Onepoint had to be based on an agile methodology, led by a multidisciplinary and autonomous team.

The partner also needed to be capable of collaborating in agile mode with our research and development team.

An Organizational and Human Challenge

To meet VINCI Construction’s expectations, Onepoint assembled a multi-skilled team operating across three main areas of action and responsibility:

  • Mission leadership, ensuring consistency and quality of delivery, with expertise in IT architecture and system security;
  • A team of Data and IoT platform experts, responsible for leading acquisition workshops, specifying interfaces, selecting the necessary platform components, developing the pilot, and building the data processing pipelines;
  • A team of technical experts, in charge of configuring and deploying the platform components and implementing the processing pipelines.

Concrete and Operational Use Cases

One of the first use cases focused on tracking construction site assets. It enabled the practical application of data collected from construction equipment. Analyzing the movement of machinery made it possible to monitor their positioning, route consistency, and idle times — all valuable insights for optimizing costs and reducing environmental impact.

More innovative use cases also emerged, such as the digital monitoring of construction sites. These leveraged artificial intelligence to identify and track the different phases of project execution.

An Industry Ripe for the Platform Economy

As we’ve seen, the performance of construction industry players like VINCI Construction heavily relies on their ability to anticipate and plan effectively. Olivier Vermont’s testimony highlights that construction and industrial companies alike have every reason to adopt a Data and IoT platform approach.

The operational capabilities enabled by such platforms — along with their capacity to process and extract value from data — are now essential to achieving operational excellence and envisioning the next generation of services.
